Four reasons why the fight against climate change is likely to fail

March 15, 2014

Democrats in the Senate stayed up all night talking about the perils of climate change. But while there's hope that technology, changing consumer and business practices or new policies could finally turn the tide and slow or reverse climate change, there are also good reasons to think those efforts will fail. [...]

How Inge Lehmann discovered the inner core of the Earth

February 19, 2014

Inge Lehmann was a Danish mathematician. She worked at the Danish Geodetic Institute, and she had access to the data recorded at seismic stations around the world. She discovered the inner core of the Earth in 1936, by analyzing the seismic data from large earthquakes recorded at different stations around the world. [...]

The Mathematics of Extreme Climatic Events

Conference Announcement, Conference Report

The UK’s Launch event at the Isaac Newton Institute was a fantastic success and the videos are now online!
The guest speakers included:

  • Introduction by Mr Howard Covington (Chairman of the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences Management Committee)
  • Mathematical approaches to improving climate predictions, interactive hazard warnings and public explanations by Prof Lord Julian Hunt (Emeritus Prof of Climate Modeling, UCL, Hon Prof at DAMTP and a member of the House of Lords)
  • Extreme Events and Health Protection: What are the Challenges? by Prof Virginia Murray (Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection, HPA)
  • A Financial Perspective of Extreme Climatic Events by Dr. Filimon Gournaris (Securis Investments)
  • Exploiting Wave Energy: Why We Shouldn’t Give Up by Prof Rod Rainey (Head of Technology, Floating Structures, Atkins Oil & Gas)
  • Don’t know, can’t know: communicating risk and deeper uncertainty by Prof David Spiegelhalter (Winton Professor for the Public Understanding of Risk, University of Cambridge)

Followed by a Panel Session of questions and answers and a wine reception!

Very interesting afternoon, particularly enjoyed the presentation from Virginia Murray of the HPA. If action on climate change is to succeed it is imperative that information is provided to all that is clear, definitive and attractively presented.
